March is an exciting time for gardeners, the light is returning and spring bulbs are in bloom. Seed sowing can begin this month but always keep an eye on weather conditions and try to plan ahead, far better to follow the weather than the calendar.
Jobs that can be carried out this month, depending on weather conditions:
- Feed the soil, top dress beds with organic matter such as compost or manure
- Plant early potatoes
- Sow sweet peas
- Plant raspberry canes
- Plant asparagus crowns
- Plant strawberries
Some vegetable seeds to sow this month:
- Chillies and tomatoes on a warm sunny windowsill or heat mat
- Early peas in lengths of guttering, modules under cover or direct if the soil is warm enough
- Beetroot direct under a cloche or multi sow in modules under cover to plant out as clumps of seedlings
- Celeriac undercover
- Carrots towards the end of the month direct under fleece or tunnel cloches
- Lettuce and radish in a cold frame or under cloches
- Summer cabbages in modules under cover or direct under cloches
- Leeks and onions
I agree about following the weather rather than the calendar. I won’t be doing any planting or sowing until towards the end of the month. xx

I won’t be doing anything else at all if this rain keeps up! Hopefully drier weather next week 🙂
